SEO has a reputation for being complicated, and parts of it are. But for most small business websites, the SEO best practices that make the biggest difference are pretty simple. If your site gets these right, you’re ahead of a lot of your competitors. Here they are in plain English, followed by a quick checklist.
The short answer: give every page a clear purpose, a descriptive title and helpful content written for your customers. Make sure the site is fast, works on phones and is secure. Link your pages together, keep your business details consistent, and keep the site up to date.
1. One Page Per Service (and Per Area You Serve)
If you offer five services, each one deserves its own page that explains it properly. Similarly, the main towns you serve each deserve a page. A single page that lists everything you do in one paragraph rarely ranks well for any of it.
2. Write Titles and Descriptions People Want to Click
The page title is the blue link people see in Google, and the meta description is the short text under it. In other words, say what the page is about and who it’s for, in plain words. For example, “Kitchen Remodeling in Lewes, DE | Your Company” beats “Home.”
3. Answer the Questions Your Customers Ask
The best content sounds like your best salesperson on a good day. Think about the questions people ask on the phone: how much it costs, how long it takes, what happens first. Then answer them on your site. Google’s guidance is consistent on this point: create helpful content for people, not for search engines.
4. Make It Fast and Easy to Use on a Phone
Many of your visitors are on a phone, often in a hurry. Pages should load quickly, text should be readable without zooming, and your phone number should be easy to tap. In fact, large uncompressed images are one of the most common reasons small business sites feel slow.
5. Link Your Pages Together
Internal links help visitors find related information, and they help search engines understand which pages matter. Link from your homepage to your main services, from service pages to related services, and from blog posts to the pages that turn readers into customers.
6. Keep Your Business Details Consistent
Your business name, address and phone number should match everywhere: your website, your Google Business Profile and the directories you’re listed on. Mismatches confuse customers and make it harder for search engines to trust the information.
7. Keep the Site Secure and Up to Date
Also, use HTTPS, keep your software updated and make sure someone is watching for problems. A hacked or broken site can drop out of search results fast. Fresh, accurate content also shows that the business is active.
8. Add Structured Data Where It Fits
Structured data, sometimes called schema markup, is code that helps search engines and AI tools understand your business details. It should always match what’s visible on the page. For more detail, Google’s SEO Starter Guide covers these SEO best practices in depth.
